June 2020 Letter

Greeting in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

Philippians 1: 5-7

“… because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,

Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart. For in my chains and in my defence and confirmation of the gospel, you are all partners in grace with me…”

Thirty-three years ago, Diane and I joined NCEM and truly enjoyed those ministry years in Canada. Then a 10 day trip to Rwanda in 2010 with e3 Partners, changed our lives forever. I am writing this letter to inform you that after 33 years of full time ministry, it is time for us to step back from full time ministry.  God has called us home to Canada and shown us that it is time to get to know our children and grandchildren better. My physical weariness and Diane’s ongoing health issues have also played a part in this decision.

The years in Rwanda have been fantastic years of ministry.  We have seen God work in many lives throughout all the years in the ministries God called us too.  We have been blessed by the friendship of many people.

We have resigned from our position as the leaders of the Ashes To Worship Ministry in Rwanda. Before we left, we transferred the ministry to the nationals who will continue with the work. Some of the ministry will be furthered through people we trained and other ministry will continue with the YWAM group we were working with in Ryabega, Rwanda.  The child sponsorship program will continue with them for one more year connected to the ministry we were doing there. It will then continue under YWAM Mutara.

Please pray for the sale of our home over in Rwanda. Once return flights are possible again, I will need to return to Rwanda to put it on the market. We pray for God’s timing in this.  Pray for Alphonsine our house help, and Theogen our guard, as they look after the property for us in our absence.

It is with mixed feelings we left Rwanda, but God has shown us in many ways that this is the time - time for change, and for a new adventure. We arrived in Canada on June 14 and went immediately into two weeks of mandatory isolation. We are currently in Beaumont Alberta.

We look forward to what God has planned for us in these next years as we settle back into Canadian life. Please continue to pray with us and support us in whatever ways you can as we relearn the culture here in Canada.  We are called Third Culture People now as we have our own culture – a mix between Canada and Rwanda. Pray for clarity as to where we are to settle. Also, I, Peter, will need a job in the very near future to support us in this new adventure.

On August 31, 2020 we will stop receiving financial support through YWAM Vancouver. If you would like to help us during this transition, it would be much appreciated. Our flights home from Rwanda were very costly. The tickets were close to $5000 CDN each. If you would like to financially assist us with this, and you need a tax receipt, please send your support to YWAM Vancouver as you have done before.  Cheques can be written to YWAM Vancouver and send to PO Box 57100 RPO, East Hastings Vancouver BC V5K5G6. The cheque will need to arrive at the YWAM Vancouver office before August 20th.  If you do not need a receipt, you can e-transfer funds directly to us using Diane’s email address: dianesalmond@gmail.com.  We would be most grateful for any contributions toward this debt.

Our prayer is that the future holds many blessings for ourselves and for our family as we reconnect with them. We pray that the grace of God will be upon us as we seek His will and as we seek help for our health and rest in these next weeks, months and years . Thank you for your understanding and prayers as we start this new journey.

We want to take this moment, to say thank you to you, our supporters, many of you have walked with us, over these 33 years of ministry. Thank you so much for being faithful to God and faithful to the ministry God called us to.  You have shown us much honour in trusting us with the gospel of Jesus Christ in ministering to many who have come to know Christ because of our partnership.  So thank you and may God bless you richly as you continue to serve Him with the blessings He has given you.

Please feel free to email us with any questions or words of encouragement that you may wish to write.  We know that God is not finished with us yet.  Thank you again for partnering with us.  If you are in our area, and once we are out of mandatory isolation, we hope to see many of you in the near future.

God’s blessing and love on each one

Love in Christ

I Feel Trapped

“Being heard is the most important thing needed for a healthy reentry.
Without being judged or told what you should do.”
Sarita Hartz

WOW!
“Being heard …”
“Without being judged …”
“or told what you should do.”

a counsellor listens

I feel trapped
I’ve been in this compound for 30 days straight
never out but to look over the wall
from the top of the ladder

I want to be ‘home’
and yet
I am home

I want to be there
but I’m here

I haven’t felt ‘normal’ for a long time
- normal - familiar -
the sounds of foreign-language chatter
the feel of sweat from constant warm days
the 12 hour regularity of the rising and setting of the sun
the birds singing minutes before sunrise
the noise the wind makes going through the banana leaves
the smells of food cooking on charcoal

trying to fight the remembrance
of life in my passport country
it grabs me and wants to pull be back
and I often don’t fight it
I want it so bad right now
I don’t want to be here
with what seems so familiar to me
I want what used to be familiar to me - long ago
it’s a daydream
so far away
so presently unattainable

I made a choice
but some things get chosen for you
 - a powerless feeling -
choice - then shame - guilt

I feel trapped
I feel stuck
between two countries
I am burnt-out
there is shame
there is guilt
there was a choice
there is a choice
- now -
wait

I’m thankful to be here
I’m thankful for this home
I’m thankful for this property
I’m thankful for this space
I’m thankful for this host country
I’m thankful for this government
I’m thankful for these friends
I’m thankful for the food we can buy
I’m thankful for my health
I’m thankful for my husband
I’m thankful for power
I’m thankful for internet
I’m thankful for water
I’m thankful for a garden
I’m thankful for fruit trees
I’m thankful for workbooks we brought here
I’m thankful for books to re-read

I’m thankful for God
I’m thankful for Jesus
I’m thankful for the Holy Spirit

I feel free

Britt-Marie Was Here

"It's hard not to want to go back to your normal life
once you know how difficult it is to start again."

Most days I feel like I just want to go home,
I'm just not sure where that is any more.
It seems to be elusive.
